ATD defines instructional design as “the creation of learning experiences and materials is what results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills.” ATD Research last focused on this topic in 2015, and in this updated report we’ll focus on the skills and competencies of instructional designers, challenges they experience, and current practices.

Here are some key findings from the report: 

Instructional designers have many high-quality workplace skills.

  • 82% of instructional designers are good or excellent at being organized and have time management skills.
  • 85% of instructional designers are good or excellent at understanding adult learning theories.
  • 87% of instructional designers are good or excellent at facilitating training.
  • 88% of instructional designers are good or excellent at collaboration.

Instructional designers are busy professionals working on many projects.

  • 77% of instructional designers are good or excellent at project management.
    • 49% of instructional designers work on 1 to 2 projects daily.
    • 40% of instructional designers work on 3 to 4 projects daily.
    • 11% of instructional designers work on 5 or more projects daily.

Some instructional designers are using AI, and most expect to use more AI in the future.

  • 44% of instructional designers are using AI for content creation.
  • 80% of instructional designers expect their use of AI to increase in the future.

Rocki Basel, Ph.D. joined the Association for Talent Development (ATD) in 2022 as the associate director of research. Before joining ATD, she was a researcher for other national membership organizations. Her research interests include workplace culture, employee engagement, mental health, and organizational communication. She has a Ph.D. in communication studies from Kent State University.
