Join learning leaders Lisa Gary and Sandi Maxey for a virtual author chat about how L&D can strategically align with its organizations’ business goals. During this chat, Gary and Maxey will expand upon the ideas they presented in their chapters in Leading the Learning Function: Tools and Techniques for Organizational Impact, a new book published by ATD Press and written by members of ATD Forum. Gary and Maxey will share examples from their careers that demonstrate how achieving strategic alignment can help L&D teams become more effective and valuable to the business. They will also discuss tools and models that have helped them gain insight into their organizations’ business goals, find executive sponsors, and communicate the work of learning in ways that business leaders will understand. There will be opportunities for attendees to ask questions and share their experiences. This discussion will bring value to L&D professionals looking for concrete and practical tips to better align their learning programs with their organizations’ strategic business goals.

Senior Vice President, Manager, Sandy Spring Bank

Sandi Maxey joined Sandy Spring Bank in 1999. In her current role as senior vice president and manager of the learning and professional development department, she is responsible for developing and executing the bank’s enterprise talent strategy. Her areas of expertise include leadership and management, coaching, career development, sales management, and the client experience. She has 30 years of banking experience, with more than 25 years in learning and development. She holds an A.B. in sociology from the University of Georgia and an M.B.A. from Frostburg State University. She is currently enrolled the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking and is MBTI qualified and certified to facilitate the EQi2.0,CCL 360 assessments, Crucial Conversations, and Bridges Transition Management.

Lisa has 25+ years of learning and development experience, working in financial, food and manufacturing industries during her career. She is passionate about learning where she always applies a business perspective to our field. For the last 6 years, Lisa has served as Ingersoll Rand’s Chief Learning Officer where she was responsible for developing enterprise strategic capabilities of leadership development, operational excellence, strategy and market analytics, product management, innovation, and sales excellence. She was also responsible for global learning by ensuring aligned learning strategies for Asia Pacific, EMEA, India and Latin America. In March 2020, Ingersoll Rand split into two publicly traded companies, Ingersoll Rand (IR) and Trane Technologies (TT) with Lisa joining the Trane Technologies company as their CLO. She and her team are focused on building the next set of strategic capabilities as well as a reskilling / upskilling strategy as the world becomes more digital and technically enabled. Lisa served on the ATD Forum Advisory Group in 2017-2018 and served as its chair in 2019. Lisa has a BS in Marketing from Virginia Tech and a MBA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Lisa is a NeuroLeadership Institute Results Certified Executive Coach as well as a lifelong learner – tackling anything from blacksmithing to clogging. Lisa is the proud mom of a grown daughter and son, lives in Cowan’s Ford, North Carolina, with her husband and two rescue mutts.
