Tips to Prepare for the Skills Application Exam (SAE)

You've passed the CPLP Knowledge Exam! You've taken a few minutes (or days) to celebrate. You're now facing the second test on your CPLP journey, the Skills Application Exam (SAE). What should you do now? Join us to hear from three current Certified Professionals in Learning and Performance (CPLP), Denise Hicken, Laura Schart, and Lacey Wieser, about how they prepared for the SAE.

Denise Hicken

Sr. Learning Consultant, Atrium Health Floyd

Denise Hicken, M.Ed., CPLP, is a senior learning consultant for Floyd Health System in Rome, GA. Denise’s primary focus is leadership development, with a special emphasis on culture enhancement. A program she leads, Culture Conversations, was nominated as one of the top people-related initiatives for the Floyd Health System in 2018. She develops online learning for clinical and non-clinical divisions and serves as administrator for the online learning system.

Prior to joining Floyd, Denise worked as a contract instructional designer for AT&T in Atlanta. While living in Missouri, she directed the professional development program for a large bank. In this position, she developed a successful mystery shopping program based on the bank’s standards of service which Denise helped write and hardware. Way back in the day, she was a television news executive producer. Denise holds an MEd from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri along with the CPLP credential. Denise is a certified DDI facilitator and is certified to facilitate Crucial Conversations and Crucial Accountability.
 


Laura Schart
Laura Schart

Training and Development Manager, Uline

Laura Schart, CPLP, is the training and development manager for Uline in Pleasant Prairie, WI. Uline is the leading supplier of shipping and industrial supplies in North America with 11 locations and 6,500 employees in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Laura leads Uline University, a collection of learning and development tools and resources supporting onboarding and technical, professional, and leadership skill development.

Laura has 17 years of experience managing the learning function and a team of instructional designers, trainers, and learning technologists. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Northern Illinois University and is currently pursuing an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. She earned her CPLP in 2018. 


Lacey Wieser
Lacey Wieser

Learning Consultant, Wieser Learning Solutions, LLC

Lacey Wieser, CPLP, PMP has more than 20 years of experience helping individuals and organizations meet their goals through targeted learning and development and has directed learning programs in K-12 education, corporate, state government, and nonprofit environments. Lacey’s experience focuses on supporting the professional learning of science educators and her expertise includes the design, development, deployment, and evaluation of instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, and asynchronous e-learning solutions, including performance supports and microlearning. 

Lacey earned a BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MS from Louisiana State University, the CPLP credential in 2018, and the PMP credential in 2019.


Susan Kaiden, APTD

Senior Project Manager, ATD

Sue Kaiden is the senior project manager of Credentialing for the ATD Certification Institute. In this role, Sue supports candidates throughout the decision and preparation process and manages recertification for APTD and CPLP credential holders. Prior to joining the CI team, Sue was the manager of the Career Development community at ATD where she managed content and services related to career development, including ATD's Job Bank.

Before coming to ATD, Sue held executive and consulting roles in the healthcare, IT, and nonprofit sectors and founded a career coaching firm, CareerEdge. In addition, she started a job search support program for unemployed and underemployed people in the Philadelphia area which she ran for 11 years. Through this program and her coaching practice, Sue helped hundreds of people find meaningful work. Sue is the author of "Keeping Your Career on Track" (TD at Work) and the editor of Find Your Fit: A Practical Guide to Landing a Job You'll Love, a book written with 16 top-notch career coaches, published in October 2016. Sue holds an MBA from Cornell University, a BS from Miami University (Ohio), and is a certified Myers Briggs (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory practitioner.
